Internet Radio

  • In 2011, 40% of new cars sold had options for internet connectivity for streaming radio

  • http:://www.icecast.org - open source platform to provide internet radio station "icecast2"
    • There are two major components involved: the streaming server (icecast in this case) and the source client. The icecast server will be the place where all listeners of your station will connect. The source client (in general) runs on a separate machine than icecast, but does not necessarily need to. Source clients send the content to icecast and provide the stream data (encoded audio) that is then relayed out to listeners by icecast.
    • icecast runs on the server and can accommodate 100s of listeners.
    • Need compatible source client, some listed here: http://www.icecast.org/3rdparty.php
    • YP (yellow pages) directory here: http://dir.xiph.org/ (9707 streams)
      • http://www.kzyx.org -- community radio serving Mendocino county (N. Cal) -- Interesting to review. Have CAB - citizens advisory board to make nonbinding suggestions.
    • Xiph.Org Foundation is a non-profit corporation dedicated to protecting the foundations of Internet multimedia from control by private interests. Our purpose is to support and develop free, open protocols and software to serve the public, developer and business markets.
  • http://www.radionomy.com/en - apparently based on icecast -- listen to online radio or create your own station. -- the biggest webradio network in Europe, with more than 3000 internet radio stations spreading over all kinds of music genres and cultures. No talk or progressive talk, all music. Stanford radio has sports.
  • Icecast has mountpoints meaning and automatically transfers listeners from the Auto DJ to the Live stream and back again without needing to manually turn anything on or off. So you connect and all the listeners are transferred from the autodj to the live stream and then back again when you are finished.

Kpfk Radio Interference

Raymond talked with rep. from KPFK who was complaining about interference by an "illegal" radio station at 90.7Mhz.

Here's the station and probably business offices of the station in Chula Vista. It's about 5 miles from the intl border; however, their tower/XTMR is in BC, Mexico! BTW I've been listening to KPFK for about an hour, since we talked and haven't noticed any interference. Did the folks from KPFK say how much or what time of day or how long they've been experiencing interference from 90.7 in CV. I'm asking because if it hasn't been too long it's possible that the problem was noticed through a 'proof of performance' test and corrected by their engineers. How long they've been getting interference would answer this question.

I just found the station on line: http://www.xlnc1.org classical music. yes this is owned partly by the Mexican government, it is a non-commercial, listener supported station. It's not bad either, give it a listen. Next, I'll go back to the FCC and see if it's licensed in the US; I'm guessing not, but I don't know. If it is than KPFK has a grievance and can report the interference; if not ....
